The Flintstones – Public Nuisance

It is pretty sad when people object to you building Dinosaurs, Woolly Mammoths and Fred Flintstone piss off the neighbors!!!  Check this out!

Design

The house was designed by architect William Nicholson and built in 1976 as one of several experimental domed buildings using new materials. It was constructed by spraying shotcrete onto steel rebar and wire mesh frames over inflated aeronautical balloons. It has approximately 2,700 sq ft (250 m2) of living space including three bedrooms, one accessed via a spiral staircase inspired by an ice-cream cone that at the top is the same diameter as the room, and two bathrooms, and has a two-car garage. All the interior surfaces are rounded, and the master bathroom has a floor of rocks instead of tiles. Originally off-white in color, the house was repainted deep orange in 2000, and one of the domes was later painted purple.

Nicknames

The house is known popularly as “The Flintstone House”, from The Flintstones, a Hanna-Barbera Productions animated cartoon series of the early 1960s about a Stone Age family. It is also known as the Dome House, the Gumby House, the Worm Casting House, the Bubble House, and “The Barbapapa House”, from Barbapapa, a character and series of books created by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor in the 1970s.

Disrepair, restoration and remodeling

By the mid-1980s the house had fallen into disrepair, as water runoff from higher on the mountainside damaged the foundation, causing the walls to crack. After failed attempts at sealing the cracks, it was extensively restored in 1987.

San Francisco Bay Area architect Eugene Tsui undertook to remodel the house during the first decade of the 2000s. The results of Tsui’s remodel appear as the “Edises Kitchen” project, pictured on Tsui’s website. Tsui’s original concept for the remodel, including a proposed complementary second residence on the property, is detailed in depth on his earlier site.

In late 2017, new owners installed large oxidized steel sculptures of dinosaurs, a woolly mammoth, a giraffe, and Fred Flintstone in the yard.

Complaint

The house was unpopular with some neighbors, and inspired the formation of a local architectural review board. In March 2019, the town of Hillsborough filed a complaint against the current owner of the house, Florence Fang. The complaint alleges that the current owner’s modifications are a “public nuisance” and that she did not receive the proper permits for her modifications. In March 2019, Fang retained the law offices of former San Francisco Mayor Joseph L. Alioto and Angela Alioto to respond to the Hillsborough Complaint.

Do The Mashed Potato

It’s a mashed Mississippi mystery.

Jackson residents were mystified after bowls of mashed potatoes suddenly appeared on their cars, porches and mailboxes.

Jordan Lewis described the Belhaven neighborhood as a quirky one, with residents decorating road signs and putting Christmas trees in potholes.

But the probe into the puzzling potato problem is even new for them.

Lewis told WLBT-TV she spotted her first bowl of mashed potatoes on her car’s windshield.

“I walked outside yesterday morning at 7 a.m. and I got in my car and that’s when I noticed a white bowl on my windshield. It was full of rainwater. I threw it away and I was grossed out by it,” she said. “I just thought this is a harmless prank by some kids or college students in the area.”

Michaela Lin said she found a bowl of mashed potatoes on her mailbox. She said some of the potato-finders have connections to Belhaven University, a local private Christian university, which may be a clue.

“So far I have realized some of the ‘victims’ of the mashed potatoes are actually staff or Belhaven students or alumni. I feel like there has to be a connection there!” Lin told WLBT-TV.

However, Sebastian Bjernegard said some residents fear there’s a more sinister message behind the potatoes.

“Some people were thinking maybe the mashed potatoes were poisoned to kill animals,” he told WJTV, noting he almost stepped into a bowl of potatoes Tuesday. “I didn’t taste it. I have a three-second rule, so I didn’t touch it. But some people were worried.”

It was not immediately clear if anyone has eaten the potatoes. News outlets reported residents have not alerted law enforcement.

Unhappy Meals #FeelYourWay

When my mom first told me about this…I was sort of dumbfounded.  I mean…really???

Anyway….here is the scoop:

No one is happy all the time. That’s the message Burger King is trying to communicate with a lineup of burger meals focused on “real” moods to help raise awareness about mental health.

Timed to Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the “Real Meals” include the Blue Meal, Salty Meal, Yaaas Meal and DGAF (Don’t Give a F—) Meal. They include a Whopper, french fries and a drink.

“Burger King restaurants understands that no one is happy all the time. That’s why they’re asking guests to order a Whopper meal based on however they might be feeling,” an online release says.

The effort also pokes fun at McDonald’s, which markets Happy Meals, boxed kids’ deals that include a toy. Burger King launched an ad on YouTube showing a montage of people in various emotional states, using the line: “No one is happy all the time. And that’s OK.”

The ad swaps Burger King’s well-known chorus from the 1970s, “Have it your way,” with “Feel your way.” The music also has been changed to be more authentic to the idea that people can have a range of feelings.

This isn’t the first time Burger King has teased McDonald’s. In December, it sold its trademark Whopper for 1 cent. To get the deal, customers had to download the Burger King app on their phones. Then when they went within 600 feet of any of more than 14,000 McDonald’s restaurants, the app used geolocation technology to “unlock” the Whopper-for-a-penny deal.

The fast-food competitors have also launched rival promotions at similar times and tweak their menus to stay on top of trends. Burger King is trying a vegetarian Whopper, while McDonald’s added a meatier burger to its breakfast menus in October.

Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, has partnered with Mental Health America for the campaign. The group’s president and chief executive, Paul Gionfriddo, said: “While not everyone would think about pairing fast food and mental health, MHA believes in elevating the conversation in all communities in order to address mental illness Before Stage 4 (when someone has severe symptoms).”

“By using its internationally-known reputation to discuss the importance of mental health, Burger King is bringing much-needed awareness to this important and critical discussion — and letting its customers know that is OK to not be OK.”

On Monday, Burger King reported a same-store quarterly sales increase of 2.2 percent. It said that price hikes on its nuggets and the reintroduction of its spicy chicken nuggets helped sales, but parent company Restaurant Brands International saw adjusted earnings of 55 cents per share, falling short of estimates of 58 cents per share.

McDonald’s latest quarterly earnings, issued Tuesday, beat estimates, with earnings of $1.78 per share, versus an expected $1.75. It said a range of promotions and an investment in self-serve kiosks and other technology helped it beat expectations, though it noted that tech spending will mean higher expenses this year.

The limited-edition Burger King meals will be available in Seattle, Miami, Los Angeles, New York City and Austin, Texas, while supplies last.
